And you and your family can try sailing for FREE at Sutton SC on Saturday 8 July as part of this year’s Sutton Coldfield Community Games. Head down to Powells Pool in Sutton Park from 10.30am and get out on the water with experienced instructors.

Whether you have never stepped foot in a boat before or would love to rediscover the sport having dabbled previously, Sutton SC can get you afloat. Just grab a towel and some old trainers you don’t mind getting wet and sail into summer.

The Open Day is also part of the summer-long RYA Try Sailing events calendar, supported by boating’s national governing body and aimed at getting people who might never have known there was even the chance to go sailing near them out on the water and experiencing messing about in boats in a safe, friendly environment.

Max Coleman, Sutton SC Commodore, said:

“People are often surprised to find out they can go sailing in the heart of the Midlands, but every week at Sutton SC we have many people, adults and kids, enjoying our different activities.

“Sailing is such a family-friendly sport as you can all sail together in one boat or you can do it separately and even race against each other! Because there are so many families at clubs friendships amongst children and parents are forged on the water and in the clubhouse, and for many the club becomes a big part of their social lives.”

Alistair Dickson, RYA Director of Sport Development, added:

“The Try Sailing events were really popular last year so we are delighted to be able to offer these again this summer. Sailing is a genuine sport for all. Many venues taking part have recently benefitted from substantial investment to improve their facilities and have boats and kit available so you don’t even need to own a boat to continue after your taster.”

Sutton SC is a recognised RYA Training Centre meaning it conforms to the highest standards of quality and safety. For around £3.50 a week, a whole family can make the most of the year-round opportunities to sail at the club with a variety of boats available to hire at low cost.
