Following an online and in-store customer vote, Sainsbury’s Mere Green has announced that Parkinson’s UK Royal Sutton Coldfield and North Birmingham Branch will be the store’s new Local Charity of the Year for 2016 – 2017.

The Royal Sutton Coldfield and North Birmingham Branch of Parkinson’s UK exists to provide support and help to anyone ‘touched’ with Parkinson’s. It meets every week between 1.45pm and 3.45pm on Thursdays at South Parade Methodist Church and provides tailored exercise sessions (Yoga, Tai-chi and Extend) as well as guest speakers and entertainment events. It also arranges respite breaks and day trips for both its members and others touched by Parkinson’s living in the area

Being a registered charity all the services it provides are funded by donations and charity events. In addition the Branch regularly contributes thousands of pounds to fund research.

The organisation has access to a specialist nurse and a local adviser.

This year’s Local Charity scheme began at the end of May, when colleagues shortlisted a maximum of three charities to be put forward to the customer vote. Parkinson’s UK Royal Sutton Coldfield and North Birmingham Branch received the most votes and will receive a year’s worth of fundraising and awareness-raising from the store.

To celebrate the announcement, a launch day will take place at the Mere Green store on Saturday 6th August customers will get the chance to meet representatives from the charity and learn more about the work they do.
