SCL Podcast ep15: Hidden Needs

Welcome to the Sutton Coldfield Local Community Podcast episode 15: Hidden Needs

Thank you to Sutton Coldfield Town Centre BID for supporting this podcast

In this podcast I’ve cast a quick eye over the problem of ‘hidden needs’ within the Sutton Coldfield District.

Often portrayed as an affluent town and a leafy suburb it is easy to forget that Sutton Coldfield has much the same needs as other areas of Birmingham but because of the metrics used to measure those needs they are often left unseen. Asset-Rich Cash-Poor is one description used to describe some of the town’s elderly for example.

Families that are in financial difficulties are overlooked due to the stigma of free school meals – one of the measures used in the analyses of deprived areas.

According to a research document produced by students at Birmingham University mental health problems and financial support are just two areas where Sutton Coldfield does not receive its fair share of services.

I spoke to Kelly Round of Our Place Community Hub who shared some insights into the problems the community facility is helping to address.
