Selma is a 2014 British-American historical drama film directed by Ava DuVernay. It is based on the 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches led by James Bevel, Hosea Williams, Martin Luther King Jr. and John Lewis. And stars David Oyelowo as King, Tom Wilkinson as President Lyndon B. Johnson, Tim Roth as George Wallace, Carmen Ejogo as Coretta Scott King and Common as Bevel. Selma was nominated for Best Picture and won Best Original Song at the 87th Academy Awards.

Selma received much critical acclaim, particularly for its acting and direction. The Chicago Sun Times praised the film as “…an important history lesson that never feels like a lecture. Once school is back in session, every junior high school class in America should take a field trip to see this movie.”

”At its best, Ava DuVernay’s biographical film honors Dr. King’s legacy by dramatizing the racist brutality that spurred him and his colleagues to action” – Wall Street Journal

“Even if you think you know what’s coming, Selma hums with suspense and surprise. Packed with incident and overflowing with fascinating characters, it is a triumph of efficient, emphatic cinematic storytelling.’ – The New York Times
‘Fuelled by a gripping performance from David Oyelowo, Selma draws inspiration and dramatic power from the life and death of Martin Luther King, Jr. — but doesn’t ignore how far we remain from the ideals his work embodied.” – Rotten Tomatoes
