Gang Show rehearsals in full swing and sounding great

What: Royal Sutton Coldfield Scouts Gang Show
Where: Bishop Vesey Grammar School, Sutton Coldfield, B74 2NH
When: 21 – 25 February, 7:30pm

I had the good fortune on Sunday to be able to drop in and see Sutton Coldfield Scouts rehearsing for February’s Gang Show at Bishop Vesey Grammar School. The boys and girls of both East and West Districts were rocking some great tunes from the 70’s and 80’s and I can’t wait to catch up with them again in a few weeks when they will be in costume.

Around 50 cubs, scouts, explorers and leaders from across the Royal Town will be coming together to perform at the 50th anniversary show. One of the leaders taking part was also at the first Gang Show 50 years ago!

Nigel Palmer, Chairman Sutton Coldfield Gang Show, said:

“This year’s show will be better than ever before. I’ve seen the work that the young people have put into this over the last six months. The talent and dedication they have is truly amazing. The opening number will have you on the edge of your seats. You’ll be splitting your sides at the comedy sketches. And you’ll be awestruck at the finale.

“If you are lucky enough to know any of the performers you will know what a terrific experience this is for them. Over the years, hundreds of young people have relished this opportunity to perform, to learn new skills, make new friends. So many have seen their confidence grow beyond anything they could ever expect. They have been thrilled by the applause of the audience and audiences have been enthralled by the shows.”

The Gang Show is run entirely by volunteers and without the hard work of all these people – the number of which goes into three figures – it would never happen. The only payment for everyone involved is the satisfaction they receive when the audience cheer and clap and the gang take a bow. Each and every Cub, Scout and Explorer beaming with pride.

Nigel continued:

“In a world where so much has changed the Sutton Coldfield Gang Show is still going strong and is an important asset to scouting in the town. It must be very good to be this popular! I look forward to seeing you there.”

Sutton Coldfield has a long and proud scouting history. Scouts from 85 countries came to our town when the World Scout Jamboree was held in Sutton Park in 1957. Ten years later, in 1967, the rehearsals for the first ever Sutton Coldfield Gang Show began. The first show was held at Bishop Walsh School.

The Sutton Coldfield Scouts Gang Show runs from Tuesday 21st to Saturday 25th February with shows starting at 7:30pm. Please call 01922 745678 for tickets and further information.
