Twenty-Two Schools to Benefit From Mayor’s Challenge

Earlier this year Sutton Coldfield Mayor, Cllr David Pears, invited local schools to apply for inclusion in the Mayor’s Challenge 2018 and received an excellent response.

To take part in the Eco Challenge set by Cllr Pears, and receive funding of £650, schools had to come up with an idea for how they could help improve the local environment and support local wildlife; Something that the Mayor felt also tied in with the Sutton Coldfield in Bloom initiative that forms part of the Heart of England in Bloom competition in 2018.

Twenty-two schools have been accepted onto the challenge and in addition to the £650 grant to help realise their idea, three of the projects will be awarded a further £500 in February when the Mayor visits the 22 schools to check on progress.

Councillor Pears commented:

“My passion lies with cleaning and greening up the environment and getting people outdoors into our beautiful parks and open spaces. I thought that during my term, it would be nice to recognise young people who are interested in making changes to our environment for the better and invest time in our town. I was thrilled with the response we had and with the ideas put forward and I’m looking forward to visiting the schools to see how things are progressing.”
